Description

Skellig Michael is an island of wonder and mystery, standing proud in the Atlantic Ocean like a lost and ancient pyramid. With its high peaks and very steep ledges, Skellig Michael is one of the most dramatic monasteries in the world. See the island through its long and textured past from its early Christian roots through to the time of the Vikings and further.
Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is a wonder of humanity, a testament to the strength, faith and determination of a small group of monks, who built a medieval monastery and lived out in the Atlantic Ocean against all the odds.
Every page in this book is a small discovery itself, as the book contains over 30 minutes of video and music, photographs, old maps, drawings, animations and a 3D model of the island. Discover, explore and enjoy Skellig Michael as if you were there yourself.

Recaptures an evocative and sublime experience

Skellig Michael - a place apart, and extreme in every sense. Having visited this outcrop off the
kerry coast in Ireland some time ago,I found this ibook by Soliddesign captures eloquently, its unique history, beauty and desolate isolation, which I experienced, albeit during a short visit. This ibook's excellent clean design, imaginatively uses of photography, video, animation, and words. It recaptures those vivid memories experienced of a rare and sublime place, that compliments the original film 'Hermitage' made by Light-Keepers.net

A Book of Great Worth

I thought the Skellig Michael book was just going to be a simple text book but no its much better. Its full of lovely photographs, beautiful videos and really great maps. I'd like to think that I was brought to a different era and felt how I would have lived from those days…
Short films are crisp and clear, photos are extremely beautiful!!
The 3D is phenomenal as if I'm flying in the sky while I look at it from above! Amazing experience :)
Its a must have for your iPad library! Long live Ireland!

Beautiful

This really is a beautifully put together interactive book. The video footage is atmospheric and at time spell binding. The text is informative and simple to understand.
A must have/see for anyone interested in history or Ireland or just too chicken to climb the rock themselves.

Excellent iBook

I truly enjoyed reading this iBook. The music and the video's are so beautiful, it gave me the feeling of being there. The video's take you on a tour of the island, one of the videos that I loved was when it was raining, what it must have been like for the monks on the island, it's very spiritual. It's written so clear that it gave me a great understanding of what life, the island was and is like. Glendalough and Newgrange is also mentioned which I really enjoyed. It really is a great read and I highly recommend it. It was a joy to read.

a real Gem

This 'Skellig Michael' iBook by Solid Design is my first interactive book purchase. I was enthralled by the experience. Meticulously researched, lucidly written and beautifully crafted, this iBook is superbly crafted, rich in detail and succeeds brilliantly in bringing the reader into the mysterious world of ancient monastic Ireland in a manner that would just not be possible through traditional printed media alone. The interactive maps, 3-D models and atmospheric videos provide a richness of material, all combining to create a sense of life on the unique outpost that is the Skelligs. The link made with other ancient settlements such as Glendalough and Newgrange was also enlightening.
This iBook is superbly crafted, employing beautiful typography and stunning photography, and it really is a steal at only €3.99. For anyone with an interest in finding out about our Irish Christian heritage, I can think of no better way than immersing oneself into a world so beautifully brought to life through this superbly realised labour of love. As a longtime visitor to the Dingle peninsula who has yet to visit the Skelligs, this iBook has given me both the information and appetite to do just that at the very next opportunity. A real joy to read.

Creative, clear and artistic

I really enjoyed reading, listening and watching this interactive book. The music and the imagery are wonderful and is written in a clear and understated style.
It's also important to note that's it's not just about Skellig Michael but other centres of Irish antiquity and has much broader appeal than maybe apparent.
Don't be mislead by the €3.99 price tag, This is a high quality book.

Very atmospheric

This is a genuine exploration of part of Ireland's most beautiful and remote sites. Don't expect clichés here. The book introduces you to a location that is unexpectedly beautiful, in an artistic and sensitive way. On the practical side, the maps give you a great sense of the intricacies of a monastery built on so small and precarious a location. Old maps are used as well as great 3D effects—I particularly liked the 'location' video towards the beginning. Plenty of historical information is given here, enough to give you a sense of the history without drowning the reader in unnecessary expansions. And they serve to introduce what is without a doubt the jewel of the book—the wonderful videos. Not touristy clap trap but genuine and atmospheric explorations of the island, not narrated but accompanied by the most haunting music. Videos take you on a tour of the monastery, bringing the maps to life. One of the most beautiful is the video of the monastery in the rain—it's both effective and spiritual. The book also gives useful contextual information, again accompanied by videos. The Glendalough section is uplifting, and adds to the sense of Ireland as a thriving land of saints and scholars, with this network of monastic settlements forging a new sense of a progressive land. All in all I loved this—the artistic flair of the whole work moves it far beyond and above the usual mundane tourist-directed cliché and presents an artistic gem. Definitely worth the tiny price tag!
